Susan O'Quinn's Professional Social Work & Child Development Services
where we grow together
Hi! My name is Susan O'Quinn and I am a Registered Social Worker in Canada. I have been providing therapeutic counselling and social-emotional developmental guidance to individuals, parents and families in a variety of clinical roles (across three Canadian provinces) for over 30 years.
I am an avid learner and I value diversity in all forms. I began my formal training at Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where I earned a Bachelor of Child Study with concentrations in program development and developmental disabilities. During this time, I became interested in social-emotional development and factors that impede our optimal functioning such as trauma, loss and neglect. This interest fuelled further study at Memorial University of Newfoundland where I earned a Bachelor of Social Work. I later earned a Master of Social Work (clinical interventions) at the University of Toronto where I completed research on the post adoption needs of young children and their families.
I have provided support to individuals and families managing complex issues in a variety of professional roles. I have gained a deep understanding of the common ingredients impacting our mental health and emotional wellness. I believe that it is important to have access to high quality mental health & family support services regardless of where you live. This belief led me to pursue post graduate training in Online Counselling and to establish an online practice in 2010. Since then, I have focused on providing services online and gaining a broader understanding of issues impacting youth, adults, organizations & employees.
As an Infant Development Consultant, I was involved in the design, development and delivery of a medical clinic specializing in international adoption medicine providing clinical guidance on child development, parent-child relationships, attachment milestones, family education, trauma intervention, referral and intervention support. I have an enhanced understanding of developmental trauma in the early years and the importance of healthy parent-child relationships for life long growth and development.
Watching and participating in another persons growth has always been my greatest reward. My background and training provides an eclectic clinical tool kit to draw from, with working knowledge in several evidence-based therapeutic models. Much if not all of my work is rooted in teachings in John Bowlby's attachment theory.
As a Mi'kmaq person, I am aware of traditional interventions and have been focused on weaving together traditional and western healing and wellness perspectives.
With years of experience to draw upon, I can help you and/or your family resolve challenges, fuel wellness and build resiliency. Let me help as you explore your goals and develop solutions. I would be honoured to play a role in your personal or family journey.
Lastly, I am a member of the Ontario Association of Social Workers (#7427), the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (#800976) & the Newfoundland Labrador College of Social Work.
Thank you for taking time to learn more about me and my skill-set.
